In a recent test, YouTube uses AI to summarize videos.

Google seems to be experimenting with using artificial intelligence to automatically describe YouTube videos. It’s the most recent of Google’s recent generative AI initiatives to take on ChatGPT and other rivals that are also utilizing this cutting-edge technology.

These video summaries will initially only be automatically generated for English-language videos, according to a YouTube support page that was found by Android Police on July 31.

“We’re starting to test AI auto-generated summaries on YouTube, so that it’s easier for you to read a quick summary about a video and decide whether it’s the right fit for you,” says the support pages

According to YouTube, these descriptions are meant to give a “quick overview of what a video is about.” The company adds that they aren’t meant to take the place of the current descriptions given by the creators themselves:

“While we hope these summaries are helpful and give you a quick overview of what a video is about, they do not replace video descriptions.

A select group of users will see these summaries on the watch and search page. In order to help with this testing period, YouTube is urging users to provide their feedback to help in testing.

It’s unknown how these summaries will appear because no screenshots were given. They would probably include some form of notice stating that it was written by AI and not the creator of a video.

It’s hardly shocking to see YouTube adopting more AI-generated features because the search engine giant made it clear at Google I/O 2023 that it is fully committed to AI. Google’s AI chatbot, Google Bard, is getting extensions for a number of major services, including Maps, YouTube, and Gmail.
